The name Geelong was given to the town in 1837 by Governor Richard Burke and was surveyed in 1838. In its early days Geelong’s main trade was in wool. Some of the world’s best wool is grown in the Western District and the region around Geelong so the city was also home to a thriving port. Much of the Geelong waterfront was surrounded by huge wool stores.
We visit the National Wool Museum, Australia’s only comprehensive museum showcasing the Australian wool story - from the sheep’s back to the clothes rack, and from the birth of the industry in the 1840s to its place in the world today.
Our visit to Geelong also includes a city sightseeing tour and free time for you to explore the downtown area before returning to Melbourne.

Thursday 06

Our journey begins with a visit to “Living Legends” situated at Woodlands Historic Park on Melbourne’s outskirts. Established to bring retired champion horses back to the public it is home to some of Australia's finest retired racehorses, including Apache Cat, Better Loosen Up, Fields of Omagh, Might and Power, Brew, Rogan Josh, Paris Lane and Zipping. Rock, made famous in 1900 as the setting for the historical fiction novel by Joan Lindsay.

Friday 07

This morning we undertake a guided tour of the MCG incorporating the National Sports Museum. Steeped in a rich history; established in 1853,MCG web less than 20 years after the founding of Melbourne, it is often described as the beating heart of Melbourne. It has been the home of Australian Rules Football since 1859, and was the birthplace of Test cricket in 1877 and one-day international cricket in 1971.

It was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games and 2006 Commonwealth Games, attracts up to 100,000 fans to the annual AFL Grand Final and comes to life every year at the Boxing Day Test. Other sporting spectacles to have been held there include World Cup soccer qualifiers, rugby league home and away matches and State of Origin and international rugby union games.

But “the G” as it is affectionately known to locals, is so much more than Australia’s biggest sporting stadium. It has hosted Papal and Royal visits and housed US Marines, the US Army air forces and our own RAAF during World War II.

We board Melbourne’s famous Colonial Tramcar Restaurant for lunch today where the atmosphere is cosy, the service is friendly and the décor is as inviting as the colonial period these trams reflect. Dining on the Colonial Tramcar is not only a culinary delight, but it’s a trip into a little piece of Victoria’s history.
